Poland Reviews Slovak Flight Passage as Baltic States Maintain Restrictions
A spokesperson for Poland’s Foreign Ministry indicated that the request “is being analyzed,” suggesting that authorities are still assessing the situation without a final decision in place.
Lithuanian officials, however, have made it clear that their stance remains unchanged. A presidential national security adviser emphasized the country’s consistent position, stating, “I believe this is our consistent position. We certainly do not support the desire of states to improve relations with an aggressor state. Therefore, this is our very clear moral stance, which we are upholding.”
At the same time, Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry noted that it had not received a formal overflight request from Slovakia, leaving unclear whether an official ruling has been formally issued.
Elsewhere in the region, Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia have already denied airspace access for the planned trip. The visit is connected to Russia’s annual Victory Day celebrations on May 9, commemorating the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
Officials in the Baltic region have argued that, under current geopolitical tensions, standard EU and NATO procedures governing official state flights do not apply to travel involving Russia. Estonia’s foreign minister stressed that no country should allow its airspace to be used in ways that could strengthen ties with Moscow under the current circumstances.
Slovakia’s prime minister has acknowledged the refusals and said alternative routes are being considered. In a similar situation last year, he reportedly traveled to Moscow by bypassing restricted airspace through other countries and maritime corridors.
