U.S. Announces Suspension of Weapons Shipments to Estonia
Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur confirmed that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth personally delivered the news during a phone call, informing him that Washington would be halting all arms deliveries to the Baltic nation, public broadcaster ERR reported. Pevkur identified the core concern stemming from the suspension as the halt to HIMARS light multiple rocket launcher ammunition and Javelin missiles.
Attention has since turned to neighboring Finland — which shares a longer land border with Russia than any other NATO member — and whether it faces a similar freeze. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo moved swiftly to reassure the public Tuesday, stating that "this has no impact on Finland's defense capabilities."
Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen struck a more guarded tone, noting that Finland does not comment on the status of its weapons stockpiles or acquisitions. Finland's Defense Ministry told public broadcaster Yle that Washington had yet to formally confirm whether Finnish weapons orders would face the same restrictions — though at the official communications level, the US has signaled that delivery delays are possible.
Finland finalized an agreement last year to procure missile and rocket launcher systems from the US, intended for deployment across multiple platforms including fighter jets.
Both Estonia and Finland have aggressively accelerated defense spending and acquisitions since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 — a strategic imperative driven by their shared border with Moscow and the stark disparity in population size between each nation and their formidable eastern neighbor.
